Fred_and_Barney miWisdom today… One must always take care to learn from other people’s experiences, mistakes, actions and decisions. If one is to ignore this important principle, one will find themselves on the treadmill of life – moving consistently and rapidly, yet making no progress at all.

It has taken humanity hundreds of thousands of years to reach our current level of knowledge and understanding. This progress didn’t happen by chance, nor did it happen through planned intervention. We became what we are today through nothing more than the act of making and learning from our mistakes.

It is said that Fred Flintstone developed the wheel not by accident but rather through a process of mistakes that lead to a better and more effective way of thinking about his situation. Dragging big rocks along the ground all day or lifting them above his head, surely cost Fred a great amount of energy and strain. He even had the habit of dropping a rock or two every now and then on his hairy foot causing a great amount of anguish, injury and pain. Yet if Fred wasn’t the sensible character we all know he is, he wouldn’t have taken the time to learn from these mistakes; from these inefficiencies in his strategy. Therefore we may well still be hauling rocks and bricks above our heads in today’s day and age. However, thanks to Fred, that is now history.

So here was Fred Flintstone searching for a better way to do something that was so critical to his survival. And so he observed others in his Clan (including his Bestest of friends Barney Rubble) dropping these huge boulders over and over again on his foot (Ouch the pain! – Fred thought to himself). Well, after several weeks of this intense observation, he finally came up with a concept that he called the Wheel. Can you just imagine how different our life would be today if this young Fred Flintstone hadn’t taken the time to learn from his observations of others? Just imagine.

If we look at any great accomplishment in life over the history of human evolution and change, we will come to the same never ending conclusion. We as a human race are mistakaholics – meaning that we produce an endless amount of mistakes each and every day of our existence, which in effect creates the perfect learning environment. It is after all those who watch and carefully observe other’s experiences, decisions and actions and then learn from their observations that have an advantage as they progress through life.

  • Was the car built over night?
  • Were the advances of medicine discovered after one try?
  • Was the Internet created in the blink of an eye?

The answer to all the above is a resounding NO.

Everything we have before us today, is simply a creation out of a succession of mistakes that have been collated and collected over time by people who initially had little to no idea what they were doing. However, through trial and error, through the process of asking the right kinds of questions and through their observations of others, they learnt, gaining a greater sense of wisdom and understanding which lead to a higher level of knowledge and awareness about improvements that could be made to enhance their life experience.

Learning from another’s experience could be the most important factor towards achieving any kind of success in life. You will not only save time and energy by utilizing this method, but also gain insights and understandings that you may never have come across through your own undertakings.

Let’s quickly take a look at a metaphor to explain the importance of the Fred Flintstone principle:

Imagine you have been suddenly flung back through time and you now find yourself on the periphery of a jungle in a land that has no familiarity. There you are asked to save a village from a deadly virus by journeying to retrieve a medicine deep within the jungle. Obviously you have very little understanding of the land, the people and the journey that awaits you. Hence, you can do one of two things: attempt to GOOF your way towards retrieving the medicine, or you could learn from the experience of other village people who have made the journey before you.

Indeed you would first begin by asking for directions. You could even ask them about the mistakes that they made and what you should look out for at every stage of your journey. Maybe even ask for shortcuts you could take, supplies you should carry, or even things that you should be wary… of. The more information you have the better prepared you will be, and the more likely you are to succeed along your journey to retrieve the medicine.

It is said that the journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step. And it’s within this single step that lessons are learnt, directions are given, and mistakes are already made a thousand times over. It is within this single step, that one has an opportunity to learn from all who came before them; to learn from the mistakes that others made along their way. A wonderful opportunity, that will allow for a far more effortless journey towards one’s destination.

If you are about to begin your journey, you might find it helpful to first take a single step and ask yourself the following set of questions:

  • What is it that I know with certainty about this journey I am about to take?
  • What is it that I think I know that may in fact be a handful of assumptions that I am just holding onto?
  • What is it that I need to find more information about; which will help me to progress along my journey?
  • Where will I need to gather further research, and whom must I speak with who can provide me with the guidance I seek?
  • What mistakes have others made along this journey that I must learn from?
  • Are there any shortcuts I could take that could save me time, energy, money and effort?
  • What important things should I be most careful and wary about as I progress along my journey?
  • What if what I thought I knew wasn’t in fact the truth? How can I gather further evidence and proof that could put my mind at ease?
  • Given everything that I have learnt from others, what mistakes could I still potentially make along my journey? How can I best prepare for them?

miWisdom today… The more mistakes I make the more I change… the more I change the more I learn… the more I learn the more I grow… the more I grow the more opportunities appear and the more I am able to achieve in life.

This is a very simple formula, yet it has very profound implications for those who are able to understand and grasp it’s intrinsic meaning. Basically speaking, mistakes are simply a form of change that we must learn and grow from on a daily basis in order to attract the necessary opportunities that will allow us to flourish in our field of endeavor.

In our society today mistakes are frowned upon. If one makes a mistake, one is seen as incompetent and unworthy of success. Little do many people realize that mistakes are simply stepping stones to higher levels of understanding about one’s life and predicament.

Just imagine you are about to cross a river, and the only way across to the other side are a dozen stepping stones that you must walk upon. As you step onto the first stone you may be a little unsure or uncertain of yourself. You are thinking that the stone may be wobbly or that your foot may slip off, and as a result you will fall feet first into the water below. Sure, these are very uncertain times where 1 mistake could result in very wet socks. And as you progress along these stepping stones, more times than not (especially in the beginning stages of your journey), you may slip into the water. However, you have a goal, you have an objective to reach. And so you pick yourself out of the water and move forward across the stepping stones wiser than ever before for having fallen into the water below. Upon reaching the other side, you look back at your journey and realize just how much you have learnt from the mistakes you made.

Life is very much like a journey along these stepping stones. We make mistakes… We are changed or transformed by our mistakes… We learn from these changes… We grow as a result… and as we grow we make progress and attract new opportunities along our journeys. This is why it is so important never to get disheartened by the pitfalls which are there to help us gain the necessary experience we need to reach the other side of the river successfully.

The next time you feel as though the mistakes in your life are getting the better of you, try asking yourself the following questions:

  • How have I changed as a result of this experience?
  • What is life trying to teach me at this very moment?
  • How have I grown from the lessons that I have learnt?
  • What is intrinsically good about this that I hadn’t noticed before?
  • Where is the hidden opportunity that this experience has blessed me with?
  • What must I do next that will allow me to move forward towards my objective?

miWisdom today… Learning and mastering a single process, task or skill can take time and a lot of concentrated effort. This is why it is so easy for us to doubt our own abilities when we have very little experience in a specific area. Some “things” naturally take a little more time to master than others, and this is where the problems lie.

Many of us see these “things” that we need to learn as big challenges that seem rather overwhelming and daunting. Yet, little do we realise that the only difference between a person who has mastered a skill or understood a process comes down to 2 common and critical factors:

  • Knowledge and
  • Experience

We acquire knowledge by seeking out information that we want to understand and potentially put into practice. And we acquire experience by applying that information in a practical and measurable way.

In essence, what stops people from moving forward in life simply comes down to either a lack of knowledge or experience, or a lack of both. Isn’t it true, that if we knew what to do and we already had the necessary experience behind us, that there would potentially be nothing stopping us from moving forward in this area of our lives?

Acquiring knowledge and experience is all one needs to increase one’s level of confidence and proficiency in a particular area. Begin step-by-step without overwhelming your comfort zone at first, and slowly but surely stretch yourself as you progress into the future. Focus primarily on acquiring a balance of knowledge and experience each day. Over time this will allow you to create momentum and move forward at a consistent pace.

Too much knowledge and too little experience will create a pleasant intellectual comfort zone, which will prevent you from moving forward. While on the other-hand, too much experience and not enough knowledge will result in many mistakes and frustrations, therefore leading to many setbacks and potential losses in time, energy and money.

If you find yourself stuck and procrastinating within a specific niche area of your life, than find the time to ask yourself the following questions which may help you gain some clarity:

  • What is really stopping me from moving forward in this area of my life?
  • Is it my lack of knowledge, experience, or is it both that are preventing me from moving forward?
  • Where is it that I lack knowledge and understanding?
  • How can I best acquire this knowledge and understanding?
  • Where is it that I lack first hand experience?
  • How can I go about acquiring this first hand experience? Can I apprentice to someone?
  • What small steps can I take today to acquire some further knowledge and understanding in this area?
  • What small steps can I take today to gain a little first hand experience in this area?

miWisdom today… Only a fool expects the world to remain the same and constant, and then bases their choices and decisions on what they already know. This type of thinking is entirely based on past experiences, based on that which has long gone and that might not apply to the present moment. You must instead be constantly vigilant to all the new information presented to you and the changing circumstances that life brings your way on a daily basis.

Every new choice, decision and action must be made in the moment based on what you know of the moment, and not what you knew of your past. If we do not take the time and make the effort to study, take into account and reflect on everything that has changed from yesterday, than we will simply fail to see the light of new opportunities that are coming our way.

Look at every piece of information, every person, every sound and sight that enters through your senses, and begin to understand that life isn’t what it used to be, it isn’t what it was, it is, and has rather changed, and what worked for you in the past may not result in your desired outcomes in the present.

People change… the World changes… and so do You. Your choices and decisions must change too.

  • Do I understand that people change, environments change and circumstances change? As such, my strategies should be adjusted accordingly.
  • Am I basing this decision on my past experience or rather on current information presented before me?
  • What is it about my present environment that could assist me in making the best decision here?

miWisdom today… You must at the very least appear to be indispensable to others within your network. In this way you will hold insurmountable power of influence over your relationships with them. When you are wanted and needed for very specific reasons people will flock to you and will want to assist you with your every need, want and desire. You can become indispensable in two concrete ways:

  1. Become indispensable by creating a strong emotional connection or bond with the other person. If however you are unable to lock away a strong emotional connection with the person you want to influence, than your next best option is to create this bond with someone they hold very dear to their hearts. In such a way you will be able to influence them indirectly through this other person’s decisions and actions.
  2. Become indispensable through a specific knowledge-base or skill that this other person or network of people cannot do without.

Becoming indispensable is a skill in itself that the most successful people and companies have perfected over the course of many years. Think of the great influential minds or inventors of our time whom we just couldn’t do without. Think also about the companies (especially online companies) who we rely on completely for the products and services that they provide us each and every day. This is what being indispensable is all about, and it is one of your keys to abundance and success in life.

  • How can I become indispensable to the people I seek to influence most?
  • What knowledge or skill-sets must I acquire to help me achieve these goals?
  • How can I create strong and long-term emotional connections and bonds with these people on a daily basis?

miWisdom today… One’s predicaments do not last forever. It ain’t over till you raise the white flag… until that moment you must fight for all you have till the outcome you seek rests securely in your hands.

Many people start feeling sorry for themselves and they have a tendency to become frustrated and disheartened with the circumstances that life throws their way. Without a network of supportive family and friends, they see little hope and begin to wilt away into the abyss of unfulfilled dreams that have been drained of life and sustenance. Little do they realise that they are just moving through a phase, a challenge of sorts that is teaching them lessons, developing within them habits and beliefs that will eventually allow them to deserve to live a life filled with only their dreams and desires. However, unless we learn from these challenges and adapt to what life throws at us, we will indeed struggle, yo-yoing back and forth from despair to experiences of minor fragments of achievement.

  • What is it exactly that I am currently struggling with?
  • What is life trying to teach me through these experiences?
  • What must I do, and how must I adapt for me to continue to progress along this journey?
  • What new habits and beliefs must I begin adopting into my life in order to make this work?
  • Where can I get further support and assistance with these challenges?

Whether this means stepping out of one’s comfort zone and overcoming a fear, or it could just be learning to master a new skill for the first time.  Either way, one must be prepared, willing and able to step forward, adapt and do what is required in the moment, otherwise one will struggle to move forward in life to any measurable degree.

  • What possible unexpected events or circumstances could lay on the horizon for me?
  • How can I best prepare myself to deal with them as they arise?
  • What new skills must I master over the coming months to prepare me for the possible challenges that lie ahead?
  • How will I go about obtaining and learning these new skills?
  • Who could assist me with knowledge or mentor me in this area?
